In the Wall Street Journal
If you want to be notified the next time I write something, sign up for email alerts or subscribe to the RSS feed. Thanks for visiting the Cookbook!
One of my companies was recently in the Wall Street Journal for the subject of sheriff sales and foreclosures. A Broker, Eric Van Auken, that works with me closely was on site to scoop up this press opportunity…this one was all about being in the right place at the right time. Or as we say in real estate, get out there and beat the streets!

I pre-ordered the HTC Dream (Gphone) for tmobile!
So I totally gave in and ordered the new Google Phone running android from tmobile. The phone actually doesn’t hit the market until October 22, but I’m sure it will be mobbed everywhere the week it comes out and if I know myself…I will need to have it. The phone supposedly sells for $170-200, but because of my phone addiction I had to take a hit in my wallet and pay some other upgrade fees. The total worked out to $299 +tax…so about $100 more.
Now I have to wait till the 22nd of October to get it and use its new 3G service
I wonder how much smarter it will make me?

Who is going to pay when we flip the switch?

I tend to talk about this a lot in my daily business discussions and I always encounter heat on it. The issue is simple:
There are so many great free services on the internet, one day these companies offering them are going to have to “flip the switch” so to speak and turn a profit. What will happen then?
- Will people just use someone else?
- What happens when no one is left to give away free stuff?
- Will most people just stop using these services entirely?
This is why it is so important to have a real business model in place or an actual product to sell. If you are just building a super cool service that feeds off of another awesome service with no business model in the hopes that you will get bought out, you may want to rethink you exit strategy.
This is where I see the future of internet business models:

It’s Nice to Go Out and Talk Tech

This last Saturday I headed into the wonderful city of New York with one of my business partners Stoppay. We attended a party for Laughing Squid which is an internet hosting company that seems to be gaining some speed in the Web 2.0 niche.
At the event I experienced a feeling that I had almost forgot about from prior years. It is the ability to have a free flowing conversation about technology and not have to explain anything. We had a great time talking about in-depth concepts ranging from video and streaming to web 2.0 monetization strategies with a gentleman named Justin.
As the night went on we drank ourselves a little further down the rabbit hole and managed to end up at McDonalds somehow. Ugh… Till the next crazy tech meet up!

If I Could Be Like Mark…

Like Mark, if I could be like Mark… Mark Cuban is the man, I was watching him speak late last night on the techcrunch50 and he is as real as they come. I love when people in business say it how it is and talk about working and playing hard. at one point he says:
I never thought about it as work
He talks about how you have to enjoy life and play it how you want too, your rules. Times when he was broke or getting ripped off. All characteristics of someone who has been in the trenches and learned what it takes to win.
When he got ripped off from an employee for over $80,000 he just said, “time to dig in”. That’s the game we play, can YOU bounce back?

Regaining your Momentum
Commonly referred to as “Reclaiming the fire”, it is a point we all reach as entrepreneurs where we feel a little stalled. Maybe something you have been working on for a while seems to be dragging on with pointless meetings, or maybe you just read how a potential client of yours just closed a deal with your pseudo competitor on techcrunch..
Whatever that reason may be, it can feel like your going nowhere and loosing ground. This is probably where most people get pressured to go back to (or start) work at a 9 to 5 job living in one of those awesome cubicles. My opinion is that this is the best time to relax and do a lot of thinking, when you don’t know what to do, sometimes the best thing is to just stay still and observe your surroundings.
Even if you have always been that go-getter and never take a minute to rest, maybe this is a good time. I
recently had a point where I was feeling stalled. I had just sold my business and took a big cut in my income in exchange for time to do bigger and better things. I figure that if I can make one successful company and then another thereafter, I am a true entrepreneur. If I can’t make another company work, then maybe the first one was just a fluke. Is this being a little hard on myself? Maybe..
Soon after selling my business I started to feel a little stalled. I don’t know if it was the lack of income or not gaining enough momentum on other projects, but it happened. It is very evident that I am in this phase because I always start resorting to the same situations in my head. (more…)

No Power = Sad Geek
These past few days I have been without power. Wow is all I can say. It was actually quite enlightening to see how different things are without the use of electronics and internet. It was relaxing, yet boring as hell.
What would happen if we had to go without power for weeks or even months at a time? Do we even have enough power infrastructure to keep us going with the exploding use of electricity?
As soon as I make enough money, I will have to invest in an industrial generator able to power my house for weeks at a time when the world is crumbling.

All they need is your Dollar and a Dream
It never fails, I head on over to the local convenience store and there is a line of people waiting for lottery tickets. I used to think nothing of it, but lately I have become very anti lotto and really annoyed by the whole culture.
How can these people not get it? It’s so rare that you win, but at the same time they keep playing. Then they say “scratch-offs are different”, baloney! Yeah, Instead of it costing a Dollar, it’s more like 3-5 or even 10! Then when they win (on the last one) $5, the
y justify it and go buy more.
“Can’t stop while your hot”, he tells me. Surrrrrrre…
Mike wrote a great post where he compared a Gambling Questioner to a revised one made by him where the words start-up and working were easily substituted for gamble and gambling.
Just goes to show you that addiction is everywhere. Use it to your advantage, tunnel it into positive efforts!

My first post for the Cookbook!
Hello anyone and everyone,
Welcome to my blog. Whether you know me or are just hanging around, I hope you find my experiences useful or at least entertaining. I mean if you can’t laugh at yourself, then what can you laugh at?
If you have no idea who I am and care to know. I suggest you read the about Jeffrey Posner section if you are interested.
What am I cooking?
At the moment I work on 2 projects:
Text Messaging - This is my newest endeavor, less than a year old it is now the main focus of my life. I worked with mobile phone technologies for a few years before taking a break with real estate. Now since the mobile market is finally gaining some speed, I have shifted my efforts back to this wonderful space and I am now in it full throttle.
