Don’t complain about exchange, use gmail!
If you want to be notified the next time I write something, sign up for email alerts or subscribe to the RSS feed. Thanks for visiting the Cookbook!
Just a quick rant. I have been reading and hearing a lot about people complaining about how android does not support exchange (yet ;).
All I have to say is that ever since I switched all my email over to gmail my spam rate has drastically gone down. Another great thing is that gmail on the G1 works almost exactly as it does on your desktop. I understand if you work for a big company and you have to use exchange, sucks for you, for now.. but if you don’t need exchange and/or have a small business, consider moving your enterprise or personal email over to google.
It has saved me a considerable headache already!
Btw: posting this from the G1 ![]()

Leadership Poem
So I don’t usually stretch and write poems, but for some reason I was just feeling saucy today. As I sat down to jog up some ideas and write a small post, it just started flowing so i went with it…
Leadership is an art all in of itself
Most lead by example, but the best do it stealth
Know your team’s skills and how they tend to think
This will ensure that there is no weakest link
Pick everyone up when they are down
Hide your emotion, don’t show them your frown
You are the leader, you must hold it together
Be loyal to your team and they will follow forever

One of my favorite networking tools
I have been carrying around this business card for a while now and I feel it has done way more good than bad. I usually give it out to break the ice at an event or network gathering. Using a card like this takes a keen sense of social skills so if you decide to give it a shot, use your judgment. You wouldn’t want to end up making enemies when all you were going for was a laugh ![]()

Where to have a meeting
I had a meeting at Starbucks the other day (one of many that have been had there) and I started to think if the places I am meeting at have an effect on the outcome of the meeting itself. Now there have been many things written on this, studies done and tape sets made, but if you are reading this then you are here to get my opinion anyway…so here it is:
If you think it will break the meeting it will. If you go with it, then it probably won’t.
A few things this depends on…
- How comfortable you are in public situations?
- Can you control the meeting with outside distractions?
- Is there enough room for everyone you are with? (big issue in NYC public places)
- Will there be any note taking or paper signing?
- How long will the meeting be?

It’s Nice to Go Out and Talk Tech

This last Saturday I headed into the wonderful city of New York with one of my business partners Stoppay. We attended a party for Laughing Squid which is an internet hosting company that seems to be gaining some speed in the Web 2.0 niche.
At the event I experienced a feeling that I had almost forgot about from prior years. It is the ability to have a free flowing conversation about technology and not have to explain anything. We had a great time talking about in-depth concepts ranging from video and streaming to web 2.0 monetization strategies with a gentleman named Justin.
As the night went on we drank ourselves a little further down the rabbit hole and managed to end up at McDonalds somehow. Ugh… Till the next crazy tech meet up!

Let me guess…You Have a Great Idea and No Business Model!

What is going on these days with all these presentations at the Tech Crunch 50 having nothing more to offer than a good idea? When the judges ask the presenters on how they will make money, this seems to be the general consensus.
Well, it’s complicated
Are you kidding me? When did it ever become the standard to figure out how you are going to make money after you have a product? How does anyone in their right mind put their life, time, family and money into a business when they don’t have a clue how it will ever generate a dollar?
Necessity is the mother of all invention

Cooperative Competition
I go back and forth on this topic from time to time; sometimes I feel it’s good and sometimes not. In any negotiation, there is a winner and a looser. Same goes with cooperative completion. If you are all trying to work together, there has been some sort of agreement or verbal understanding that everyone has come too.
This situation is no different.
The reason I go back and forth on the subject I because when it’s good for me, I like it and when it’s bad for me, I don’t…We’ll Duh!
Recently a business associate of mine came back and wanted to work together after we had previously talked about doing something exclusive. Since that, he had gone and basically slept with everyone else in the business and currently has some sort of light partnership with them. Business is business so I am not offended that he went a different direction.

Can You Take Being in the Spotlight?
Let’s face it… If you are going to do anything in business that ends up being big you’re probably going to get thrown in the spotlight from time to time. Being in the spotlight can take shape in many forms and some will be easier than others. I have been in the spotlight a few times in small business environments and as I am getting older and more successful, these moments are coming more frequently and are bigger.
Everyone wants to be the Guy behind the Guy
In almost every business venture I embark on I always end up being one of the main faces of the company. Why? It’s not because I am smarter per say… It’s just that I am willing to face the heat so to speak. Being the face of a company or project is an important element in business relationships and necessary to satisfy the overall flow. If you can’t take people threatening you with lawsuits and other claims on how they will ruin your life on a regular basis than this may not be for you. Don’t take that last sentence lightly, it will happen more and more depending on how much you play the game.

The Anatomy of a Good Business Meeting
At this point in my life I have acquired a lot of meetings and been in front of some pretty serious people. I
have learned that there is an art to having a good and productive meeting with a potential client/partner and it is a skill similar to being a good actor. I touched on the importance of meetings briefly in a previous article, but I felt that the anatomy of a good meeting deserved a greater explanation.
An initial meeting usually goes one of three ways in my experience.
- Synergies with potential benefits to all parties, definite second meeting
- Possible synergies but wrong department, maybe get a follow up with the right people
- Waste of Time
As I went to more and more meetings I realized that a lot of them tended to be a waste of time. People going through the motions to fill their day, stroking each others ego so to speak. This is where the screening process comes into play.

Are you in the boys club?

We all know that contacts help in business, the right ones anyway. Too many times I have been to meetings where everyone thinks we are in the right place talking to the right person when we are really not. The problem is that big companies have so many employees and VP’s and blabla that it is easy to get confused with it all.
I have two schools of thought when it comes to this:
- Pitch until you find the right person and hope for the right meeting
- Be in the “boys club” or know someone in the club
(the slow way and the fast track) (more…)
