If I Could Be Like Mark…
If you want to be notified the next time I write something, sign up for email alerts or subscribe to the RSS feed. Thanks for visiting the Cookbook!

Like Mark, if I could be like Mark… Mark Cuban is the man, I was watching him speak late last night on the techcrunch50 and he is as real as they come. I love when people in business say it how it is and talk about working and playing hard. at one point he says:
I never thought about it as work
He talks about how you have to enjoy life and play it how you want too, your rules. Times when he was broke or getting ripped off. All characteristics of someone who has been in the trenches and learned what it takes to win.
When he got ripped off from an employee for over $80,000 he just said, “time to dig in”. That’s the game we play, can YOU bounce back?

Can You Take Being in the Spotlight?
Let’s face it… If you are going to do anything in business that ends up being big you’re probably going to get thrown in the spotlight from time to time. Being in the spotlight can take shape in many forms and some will be easier than others. I have been in the spotlight a few times in small business environments and as I am getting older and more successful, these moments are coming more frequently and are bigger.
Everyone wants to be the Guy behind the Guy
In almost every business venture I embark on I always end up being one of the main faces of the company. Why? It’s not because I am smarter per say… It’s just that I am willing to face the heat so to speak. Being the face of a company or project is an important element in business relationships and necessary to satisfy the overall flow. If you can’t take people threatening you with lawsuits and other claims on how they will ruin your life on a regular basis than this may not be for you. Don’t take that last sentence lightly, it will happen more and more depending on how much you play the game.

Should you ever try Network Marketing?

If you are really in business then you must of herd of something called network marketing. Probably one of the first and most popular companies in this space was AMWAY, you may have herd of them on TV or even in some movies. For instance the Movie “GO” had a scene where the policeman and his wife were trying to convince the gay actors to join the company under them, among other things.
What is Network Marketing?
It is commonly referred to a pyramid scheme and most of them are, even if disguised as something else. The concept is simple. There is usually some sort of product or system that the company pushes as this new niche which is only available to them. I call this part the story, “our founder worked under some of the top ____ for years and now he has started this opportunity to allow you as an individual to get in on the action”, Right…
Then they tell you the breakdown on how you will make money. This is the real pitch of the opportunity and it always looks like a sweet payoff. There are many different ways to join, sometimes there is a fee other times you just need to become a customer. Whatever way you look at it, they are asking you to give them something to join and this is where they make the money. You will be told that the real money is in you becoming a successful distributor, in most cases this is false. This type of business organization relies on more and more people being a part of it to build it up. Getting people to join is the main focus of activities (with their weekly feel good meetings) and putting these people under them is where they get the residual.

Are you in the boys club?

We all know that contacts help in business, the right ones anyway. Too many times I have been to meetings where everyone thinks we are in the right place talking to the right person when we are really not. The problem is that big companies have so many employees and VP’s and blabla that it is easy to get confused with it all.
I have two schools of thought when it comes to this:
- Pitch until you find the right person and hope for the right meeting
- Be in the “boys club” or know someone in the club
(the slow way and the fast track) (more…)

Don’t call yourself an Entrepreneur!
The term “Entrepreneur” is thrown around way to easily these days. Everyone and their mother is an “Entrepreneur” and everyone knows someone that tried what you’re doing and it didn’t work. It all starts with you opening your mouth.
Stop Talking About It
If you plan on doing something business wise, then I advise you to keep it to yourself until you have made some preliminary plans; at least! People have an unfortunate habit of trying to kill your dreams, sometimes these people can consist of family members. In these situations you need to seek out advice from people who already doing what you are doing. Someone you would like to emulate, in a business sense.
Ask them if it’s possible? If they are an honest person, you’ll get an entirely different answer.

About the Chef

Think of me as the Coolest Geek You’ll Ever Meet…
Jeffrey Posner
Funny Geeky and Crazy
jeffrey(at)capitalistcookbook.com
Kind of your typical rogue entrepreneur’s story. After high school I went to college for a year or two and decided it wasn’t for me at that point. I kind of skated around for a little while until a friend tipped me off to a new tech school that was making way. The school was CHUBB (back in 1997) and I took to technology like a fish in water. After working in New York City for a few years I became addicted to gadgets and other cool James Bond like concepts.
I am different than the average geek and a hell of a lot tougher. A tech geek that actually loves the business side (imagination constantly being crunched with logic and fundamentals) which makes a deadly combination…IMO
Currently doing anything I can so I don’t have to get a job and end up in the “rat race”. It’s been about 5 years since I had a job…Can I go the distance?
