It’s Nice to Go Out and Talk Tech

If you want to be notified the next time I write something, sign up for email alerts or subscribe to the RSS feed. Thanks for visiting the Cookbook!

This last Saturday I headed into the wonderful city of New York with one of my business partners Stoppay. We attended a party for Laughing Squid which is an internet hosting company that seems to be gaining some speed in the Web 2.0 niche.

At the event I experienced a feeling that I had almost forgot about from prior years. It is the ability to have a free flowing conversation about technology and not have to explain anything.  We had a great time talking about in-depth concepts ranging from video and streaming to web 2.0 monetization strategies with a gentleman named Justin.

As the night went on we drank ourselves a little further down the rabbit hole and managed to end up at McDonalds somehow. Ugh… Till the next crazy tech meet up!

Let me guess…You Have a Great Idea and No Business Model!

What is going on these days with all these presentations at the Tech Crunch 50 having nothing more to offer than a good idea? When the judges ask the presenters on how they will make money, this seems to be the general consensus.

Well, it’s complicated

Are you kidding me? When did it ever become the standard to figure out how you are going to make money after you have a product? How does anyone in their right mind put their life, time, family and money into a business when they don’t have a clue how it will ever generate a dollar?

Necessity is the mother of all invention

What is RSS?

Definition - RSS is an XML-based vocabulary for distributing Web content in opt-in feeds. Feeds allow the user to have new content delivered to a computer or mobile device as soon as it is published.

An RSS aggregator or RSS reader allows the user to see summaries of all their feeds in one place. Instead of visiting multiple Web pages to check for new content, the user can look at the summaries and choose which sites to visit for the full versions.

Regaining your Momentum

Go-getters like liquorCommonly referred to as “Reclaiming the fire”, it is a point we all reach as entrepreneurs where we feel a little stalled. Maybe something you have been working on for a while seems to be dragging on with pointless meetings, or maybe you just read how a potential client of yours just closed a deal with your pseudo competitor on techcrunch..

Whatever that reason may be, it can feel like your going nowhere and loosing ground. This is probably where most people get pressured to go back to (or start) work at a 9 to 5 job living in one of those awesome cubicles. My opinion is that this is the best time to relax and do a lot of thinking, when you don’t know what to do, sometimes the best thing is to just stay still and observe your surroundings.

Even if you have always been that go-getter and never take a minute to rest, maybe this is a good time. IFeierabend recently had a point where I was feeling stalled. I had just sold my business and took a big cut in my income in exchange for time to do bigger and better things. I figure that if I can make one successful company and then another thereafter, I am a true entrepreneur. If I can’t make another company work, then maybe the first one was just a fluke. Is this being a little hard on myself? Maybe..

Soon after selling my business I started to feel a little stalled. I don’t know if it was the lack of income or not gaining enough momentum on other projects, but it happened. It is very evident that I am in this phase because I always start resorting to the same situations in my head. (more…)

No Power = Sad Geek

These past few days I have been without power. Wow is all I can say. It was actually quite enlightening to see how different things are without the use of electronics and internet. It was relaxing, yet boring as hell.

What would happen if we had to go without power for weeks or even months at a time? Do we even have enough power infrastructure to keep us going with the exploding use of electricity?

As soon as I make enough money, I will have to invest in an industrial generator able to power my house for weeks at a time when the world is crumbling.

I am different than the average geek and a hell of a lot tougher. A tech geek that actually loves the business side (imagination constantly being crunched with logic and fundamentals) which makes a deadly combination...IMO ;) Currently doing anything I can so I don't have to get a job and end up in the "rat race". It's been about 5 years since I had a job...Can I go the distance? (read more)
